Coronation Street the Musical. The journey from TV to a stage musical

It’s been a very long year for all of us on this journey, we are so close to getting a famous, if not the most famous TV brand, onto the musical stage. The project is Corrie – yes, ‘Coronation Street the Musical’. A big a brand as you could wish for and as a digital creative a great opportunity to connect a musical project to the online world.

Will it make it all the way through onto the stage? I hope so, it deserves to be, it won’t be for lack of trying from the entertainment company, Reckless Entertainment and key people at ITV.

Why has it taken so long to get off the ground? The difficult nature of the project is down to the (understandable) protectiveness by the brand owners, the transformation to an untested medium ( Soap to stage musical?), an unknown entertainment company with a big heart but not an obvious  company you’d associate with large scale TV brand, and the internal  corporate challenges, which have been well documented, within ITV. Knowing all the hurdles involved would you put your neck on the block for something as daring and inspirational as this? Of course it is!

When I mention the idea of a ‘corrie musical’ to many of my close friends they chuckle away! But wait folks, I’ve seen test screenings, heard the songs and understand how it will work as a musical story – it is fantastic! I’ve seen many musical productions in the West End and this will be a production that is full of great songs, warm humour with northern grit, worthy of any West End production.

If you’ve seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV,  then you might remember one particular episode when the entire program was transformed into a musical – they trashed the conventional ‘kick ass vampire slayer’ soap story approach and produced a brilliant and memorable episode often highlighted as one of the best musical’s ever produced for TV! Go check it out ‘Once More, With Feeling’ on You Tube. If Buffy can do it, then…

I’m going to produce an online record of the journey that will reflect on the last twelve months as well as the exciting times ahead. If nothing else this will help to remind me, and those involved, how much was sacrificed to try and make this journey happen.

Feel free to drop me a line with any questions from the past or questions I can ask of others going forward…
